Understanding Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a distressing condition that can occur after cancer treatment, causing swelling as a visible reminder of the journey. It happens when lymph fluid builds up due to a damaged or blocked lymphatic system.
This book simplifies the science of understanding lymphoedema, helping patients identify symptoms, risk factors and treatment options. By shedding light on early warning signs it encourages early detection of lymphoedema, which can significantly reduce long-term effects.
While the book focuses on the arm and breast areas, its practical guidance applies to other parts of the body as well.
Prevention and Early Detection
Professor Boyages emphasises that the key to managing lymphoedema lies in prevention and early detection. The book shares practical steps to reduce risk, including gentle exercise routines, skincare tips, healthy nutrition and safe recovery practices after surgery or radiation.
By educating readers about early symptoms, the book empowers them to act before lymphoedema becomes severe, aligning with the philosophy of “taking control.”
Through this approach, Lymphoedema: Taking Control supports not only patients but also clinicians striving to provide the best lymphoedema education in Australia and beyond.
